I started writing this article over two weeks ago. I pulled together treasured notes from my phone and journals, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get the words to come together. I knew the information was true and powerful, but it didn’t carry the life and breath of the Spirit I know is possible.
So, I’ve been wrestling and learning more about receiving, myself, in this process. Because, honestly, positioning yourself to receive is not so much about the information as the transformation. We receive from God to become more like Him. We exchange our old nature for His holiness and our thought patterns for His wisdom. In looking for the right words, I’ve been exchanging me for Him over and over, letting Him burn away the dross and take me closer to the core of who He says I am.
Not Another a Formula
Our Creator is not a god of formulas. We can find patterns and rhythms all around us in the ways He works, but formulas tend to remove us from relationship. Receiving from God is all about cultivating relationship with Him. There are no divine vending machines or apps. We don’t align ourselves with Steps 1, 2, and 3 to open heaven’s windows. No, it’s much more intimate and real. So real, in fact, He will touch parts of you you didn’t know existed, even as He reveals Himself in startling vulnerability and power.
I may share in a later post some of the many ways we can align with God, but today I want to concentrate on what the photo above so beautifully displays: the joy of receiving. If we miss joy, we’ve missed God. Even in His most painful journey, Jesus showed us how joy leads the way. No matter what you give up or receive, joy must be part of the exchange. Deep, divine joy.
“I love each of you with the same love that the Father loves Me. You must continually let My love nourish your hearts… My purpose for telling you these things is so that the joy that I experience will fill your hearts with overflowing gladness!” John 15:9,11 TPT
“Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.” John 16:24 NASB
Soak It In
The Spirit led me to the photo above when I first started writing this two weeks ago. It reminds me of the first warm spring day, birds singing, sunshine on my face. I look forward to that moment all winter. I set everything else aside, find the perfect spot, and posture myself to soak it all in. Positioning yourself to receive the first signs of a new season brings life and hope.
On the other hand, if you’ve ever stood in a shower, freezing because you’re not in the direct flow of water, you’ll understand what I mean when I say it matters how and where you position yourself. You can be so close, but miss entirely the purpose and provision being given. I’ve been so close but missing it for nearly two weeks because I was trying to write from a sense of obligation rather than resting in the joy of His presence. As soon as I stopped wrestling with doing it right, stopped worrying about time ticking away, and simply sat in the smile of my Papa-God, the words came like warm water over me.
The truth was there all along. His words were always pouring forth. But it took me sitting with Him, leaning into relationship, listening, resting, soaking in His love in order to receive the revelation He had to give.
Wherever you are, whatever you may be wrestling with, whatever questions you may be crying out to God, lay them down at His feet and sit beside Him. Just sit still.
- Let Him be your Father and Friend.
- Let Him smile over you and love on you.
- Let Him sit in silence and delight in your upturned face.
Here you are positioned to receive more than you’re even asking
